“HE LOVED all of you. He just wouldn’t budge on the issue. I never
understood that. I mean, with them passing the way they did, as hard as it was, I had to go through the motions of doing everything that needed to be done funeral-wise. I can’t imagine not being able to say good-bye.”
Daniel looked so uncomfortable telling me this that I had to reassure him. I heard the back door open, and I looked up and saw Anita walk through the door carrying a few bags with her. She cast me a look, and I nodded to her. In silent communication, she understood what I was about to do. She went to the coffee pot and poured herself a cup, lit the stove, and started breakfast. Soon she would sit down and speak her mind as well.
“You need some help, Ms. Anita?” Hale asked, always the gentleman. Anita looked at him, at me, and finally over at Daniel and shook her head. “No, baby, you sit right down there and listen to this too. There are things she is saying that you don’t even know about. Don’t mind me. I’ll be coming over there shortly.”
“Daniel, there is good reason why your father never wanted to come back to this house,” I said. “Now I am going to tell you why.”
Chapter 28
Daniel ANITA set plates of eggs, bacon, and sausage on the table, along with a large jug of orange juice and coffee. She poured herself a cup and sat down next to Carol and squeezed her hand. I looked at Hale, and he winked at me and stared back at Carol, waiting for her to begin. I felt a knot gathering up in my stomach, but I couldn’t help but be curious about what she was about to tell us. Anita seemed to know a great deal already and was there to support Carol in telling her tale.
“Your father was a wonderful child and a very sweet man, Daniel. That’s the first thing I want you to understand. As a little boy, he always seemed to be the center of attention and would capture the heart of anyone he came into contact with. I was eight when he was born. Mom and Dad had him a little later than they had the rest of their children, but it was a joy to have him. When he was born, there was so much joy in this house that these walls could barely contain it.”
Carol’s eyes stared off into yesterday, and she wrapped her hands around her coffee mug, a smile tugging at her lips. “See, Michael was special. He was born premature, and the doctors didn’t think he would make it. Mother had a very rough pregnancy with him and was bedridden the last few months prior to him being born. Nurses would come and take care of Mother during her pregnancy, and doctors were called quite often, sometimes in the middle of the night. Papa Jim was very much beside himself and spent hours at her bedside, tending to her.
